ean 2014-2016 sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTa) in the Northeast Pacific
February 28, 2020

A recent study explored sea surface temperature anomaly forecasts from an ensemble of eight global climate prediction systems contributing to NMME and found that predictability of warm temperature anomalies off the US West Coast was conditional on which process was driving the temperature anomalies in different phases of the heatwave.

Subsurface ocean heat content anomalies regressed onto low-pass filtered time series of eastern tropical Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies. The black boxes outline the eastern (10°–20°S, 100°–120°E) and western (10°–20°S, 50°–90°E) Indian Ocean, showing the east–west dipole structure.

In two papers, Jin and coauthors investigated how decadal variations of subsurface ocean heat content (50–300 m) in the Indian Ocean respond to conditions in the Pacific region.

SST anomalies in the boreal winter
August 3, 2018

A coupling in Pacific dynamics has been increasing in observational records between 1950–2017, leading to more frequent occurrences of multi-year warm events like the marine heatwave of 2014–15

MOC time series at 34.5S
May 22, 2018

An international team of scientists used six years of simultaneous moored observations with satellite winds to produce a new MOC volume transport record for 34.5°S in the South Atlantic Ocean.

RAPID and MOVE array locations
May 9, 2018

Scientists have investigated differences between two arrays (at 16N and 26N) and found that both datasets show deep waters (below 1100 m) at the western boundary becoming fresher and less dense, but there remain discrepancies in the methods measuring ocean circulation.

sensible heat and evaporation fluxes in the Arctic Ocean
April 19, 2018

Researchers conclude that changes in sensible heat transfer and evaporation fluxes — in response to strong regional trends in sea ice cover — are becoming increasingly consequential to Arctic climate variability and change.

Southern ocean carbon flux to the atmosphere
January 18, 2018

To better understand climate variability and the Southern Ocean, researchers estimate spatial correlations of ocean properties to reveal how many observing platforms are necessary to adequately observe carbon and heat.

A Southern Ocean polynya
November 2, 2017

Researchers observed a natural, regular, multidecadal oscillation between periods of Southern Ocean open-sea convection, which can act a release valve for the ocean’s heat, and non-convective periods.

Monthly SST anomalies 1920–2016
August 30, 2017

New research confirms that links between warm and cool years in the California Current System and El Niño are important but imperfect.

Three-dimensional pathways of deep water upwelling from the Atlantic Ocean over Southern Ocean topography
August 16, 2017

A new study combines ocean observations with three state-of-the-art ocean models, revealing the full three-dimensional pathway of deep water to the surface of the Southern Ocean for the first time.
