This presentation includes two parts. The first is a review of DYNAMO (Dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation), an international field campaign in the tropical Indian Ocean and the surrounding regions during October 2011 – March 2012. The review will cover the success and lesson learned, current status of data and modeling, unanticipated new results, current activities of hypothesis testing, and remaining challenges.
The second part is a briefing on an international effort of planning for a “Year of the Maritime Continent (YMC)”. YMC is envisioned as a year-long field campaign over the Indo-Pacific Maritime Continent in 2017 – 2018, with several intensive observing periods (IOPs). The briefing will present the motivations of YMC, its main components, potential international participants, and planning activities.
