Persistent circulation patterns related to Rossby wave breaking processes and the jet stream are responsible for a number of high-impact weather events in Australia, including heat waves, drought, flash drought, and heavy rainfall events. Interactions between convection in the tropics and the mid-latitude flow are also important for the development and persistence of these patterns, and thus for the intensity and longevity of these extreme weather events.
