Physical modeling of the deep ocean: Challenges and opportunities

A general review of how deep- and abyssal-ocean physical properties are represented in ocean general circulation models will be presented. Related challenges that include long diffusive time scales, bottom topography details, current pathways, convection / ventilation, model drift, and mixing – among others – will be discussed. Opportunities and possible approaches to address some of these challenges will also be considered.
