(Invited)
The biological carbon pump is driven by diverse processes including sinking particles, vertical migrations of various taxa, and subduction and vertical mixing of organic matter. Each of these has its own depth horizon and sequestration duration, elemental stoichiometry, and response to surface productivity and a changing ocean. Investigating biological carbon pump responses to climate change requires recognition of the heterogeneity of these processes and the physical, chemical, and ecological interactions that drive them. This talk will highlight recent interdisciplinary approaches or quantifying different aspects of the biological carbon pump and their drivers in a changing ocean.
