Talk
The subtropical high and tilted rain belts in the IAS region are importantly shaped by mean zonal momentum [u]. For example, the zero line between tropical easterlies and midlatitude westerlies has special importance for stationary Rossby wave features and the steering of transient weather. We will seek to elucidate these climate-weather connections by showing differences of weather and its averages for contrasting spells and regimes of [u], and discuss the underlying factors governing [u] and its predictability on extended-to-seasonal timescales.
