2018 Announcement for US CLIVAR Panel Member Nominations

NOMINATIONS DUE January 3, 2018

 Submit nominations here

The US CLIVAR Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) seeks qualified individuals to serve on its three subsidiary Panels:

These Panels formulate science goals and implementation strategies, catalyze and coordinate activities, and work with agencies and international partners to advance the progress of the climate research community. It is a particularly exciting time to join the US CLIVAR Panels, as they embark on planning activities to address the goals and research challenges articulated in the US CLIVAR Science Plan (released December 2013).  During the next fifteen years, the program will foster understanding and prediction of climate variability and change on intraseasonal-to-centennial timescales through observations and modeling with emphasis on the role of the ocean and its interaction with other elements of the Earth system, and to serve the climate community and society through the coordination and facilitation of research on outstanding climate questions.  Key research challenges include decadal variability and predictability, climate and extreme events, polar climate changes, and climate and marine carbon/biogeochemistry.

Each Panel is seeking members to enhance current strengths while adding expertise in new areas. Qualified nominees are expected to represent the broader interests of the research community, be willing and able to engage in scientific as well as programmatic discussions to advance Panel activities, and work with other members of the US and international CLIVAR communities.

The US CLIVAR POS Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in one or more of the following areas: (a) operational ocean or coupled ocean-atmosphere data assimilation or forecasting; (b) large-scale and/or regional-scale (e.g., coastal) ocean operational networks and their design; (c) uncertainty estimation in observations and/or models of the ocean, atmosphere, and/or cryosphere; (d) theoretician with interest in observation-model syntheses; (e) biogeochemistry, carbon cycle, and/or tracers; or (f) remote sensing of ocean, land, and atmosphere.

The US CLIVAR PSMI Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in field/process studies or model development in one or more of the following areas: (a) coupled atmosphere-ocean interactions, (b) climate variability on interannual and longer timescales, or (c) high-latitude processes and modeling (e.g., sea ice modeling).

The US CLIVAR PPAI Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in one or more of the following areas: (a) ocean dynamics, ocean circulation, or land-ocean-atmosphere interaction; (b) climate analysis, prediction (subseasonal to decadal), and projection; (c) associated linkages and applications in stakeholder and user communities across multiple sectors (e.g, energy, agriculture, ecosystems, water, transportation, national security); or (d) short- and long-term weather and climate extremes and event attribution, with emphasis on drought.

New panelists will serve for a term of four years and must have a US affiliation. Panel members should expect to attend annual meetings of the Panel typically held in the summer. Every other year, the Panel meeting is held as part of a US CLIVAR Summit, which assembles the SSC, the Panels, the Project Office, funding agency managers, and other US and international program representatives to review progress, explore science needs, and plan future activities. Travel to attend the annual meeting is arranged and funded by the US CLIVAR Project Office. In the interval between annual meetings, Panel activities are carried out through email and teleconferences.

Self-nominations are encouraged and welcomed. To nominate yourself or a colleague, please submit the following via the Panel Nominations Page on the US CLIVAR site:

  • Statement of interest identifying a Panel which you want to serve and describing qualifications and research interests, particularly as they apply to the Panel focus and needs (less than 500 words)
  • A two-page vitae noting relevant publications
  • Note: please do not solicit or send letters of recommendation.

The deadline for submission is Wednesday, January 3, 2018. The US CLIVAR SSC will review applications and nominees will be notified of decisions in February 2018.
