I will give an overview of the recent developments of the h-NUMO model, which uses arbitrary high-order element-based discontinuous Galerkin method for multi-layer shallow water equations. We implement the barotropic-baroclinic splitting scheme by Higdon (2015), adapt it to the two-dimensional nodal DG method, and experiment with strong stability preserving Runge Kutta time-stepping for the barotropic sub-system. We compare the model head-to-head with HYCOM on the double-gyre test case by exploring the resolution required in each model to capture the eddy kinetic energy of the quasi-steady state of the flow. We also provide the preliminary performance comparison and demonstrate the model's capability to use unstructured meshes.
