In this talk, we present the configuration details and the simulation results from CliMA’s
ocean model: ClimaOcean.jl. This novel ocean model leverages the fluid dynamics library Oceananigans.jl implemented in the Julia language and targets GPU architectures, achieving unprecedented performance. We describe the numerical details and the implementation that allows us to achieve this high performance. To showcase the results of ClimaOcean.jl, we compare the solutions of two different global configurations, an ‘’eddy-resolving’’ configuration with a horizontal grid size of 10 kilometers and an ‘’eddy-permitting’’ configuration with a horizontal grid size of 25 kilometers. This comparison shows the significance of resolving mesoscale eddies in century-long ocean simulations.
