(Keynote)
In this talk I present a discretisation of the Navier-Stokes equations that satisfies discrete equivalents of continuous conservation laws on a variety of meshes. Capitalizing on the fact that the Navier-Stokes Equations form the basis of the hierarchy of geophysical models, I derive a corresponding discrete hierarchy of structure-preserving models. This opens new perspectives on the computational design and structural understanding of ocean models. The talsk presents theoretical analysis as well as numerical experiments. Preliminary results of the effort to integrate this approach into the ocean general circulation model ICON-O are reported.
