2021 US CLIVAR Panel Member Applications
The application is closed. Thank you for your interest!
***Please read the following information and submit your statement of interest at the bottom.***
The US Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) seeks qualified individuals to serve on its three subsidiary Panels:
- Phenomena, Observations, and Synthesis (POS) Panel
- Process Study and Model Improvement (PSMI) Panel
- Predictability, Prediction, and Applications Interface (PPAI) Panel
These Panels formulate science goals and implementation strategies, catalyze and coordinate activities, and work with agencies and international partners to advance the progress of the climate research community. It is an exciting time to join the US CLIVAR Panels, as they work on planning activities to address the goals and research challenges articulated in the US CLIVAR Science Plan and to contribute to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the US Priority on Earth System Predictability. US CLIVAR aims to foster understanding and prediction of climate variability and change on intraseasonal-to-centennial timescales through observations and modeling with emphasis on the role of the ocean and its interaction with other elements of the Earth system, and to serve the climate community and society through the coordination and facilitation of research on outstanding climate questions. Key research challenges include decadal variability and predictability, climate and extreme events, polar climate changes, climate and marine carbon/biogeochemistry, and climate at the coasts.
Each Panel is seeking members to enhance current strengths while adding expertise in new areas. Qualified applicants are expected to represent the broader interests of the research community, be willing and able to engage in scientific as well as programmatic discussions to advance Panel activities, and work with other members of the US and international CLIVAR communities.
The US CLIVAR POS Panel seeks new panelists with expertise to advance in situ and/or satellite ocean and atmosphere observations as well as modeling to synthesize observations to address one or more of the following areas: (a) large-scale and/or regional-scale (e.g., coastal) dynamics, modeling, and operational networks; (b) uncertainty estimation in observations and/or models of the ocean, atmosphere, and/or cryosphere; (c) theoretician with interest in observation-model syntheses; and/or (d) remote sensing of atmosphere, land, and/or cryosphere.
The US CLIVAR PSMI Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in field/process studies or model development in one or more of the following areas: (a) the use of innovative techniques, related to machine learning, data assimilation, large ensembles, and stochastic parameterizations, for earth system prediction; (b) coupled interactions (e.g., ocean, atmosphere, and/or biogeochemical) with a focus on coastal processes and surface flux parameterization; and/or (c) the application of model and observations to investigate and understand ocean-atmosphere coupled processes in the tropics and high-latitudes.
The US CLIVAR PPAI Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in climate predictability and predictions in one or more of the following areas: (a) earth system modeling and predictability; (b) climate services, climate and health, and/or climate science communication; (c) hydrology; and/or (d) coastal climate variability and change.
New panelists will serve for a term of four years and must have a US affiliation. Panel members must attend annual meetings of the Panel typically held in the summer. Every other year, the Panel meeting is held as part of a US CLIVAR Summit, which assembles the SSC, the Panels, the Project Office, funding agency managers, and other US and international program representatives to review progress, explore science needs, and plan future activities. Travel to attend the annual meeting, when held in person, is arranged and funded by the US CLIVAR Project Office. In the interval between annual meetings, Panel activities are carried out through email and teleconferences.
To apply, please submit below:
- Statement of interest identifying a Panel on which you want to serve and describing qualifications and research interests, particularly as they apply to the Panel focus and needs (no more than 500 words)
- A two-page vitae noting relevant publications (emailed to uscpo@usclivar.org)
- Please do not solicit or send letters of recommendation
The deadline for submission is Friday, January 15, 2021. The US CLIVAR SSC will review applications, and applicants will be notified of decisions following the February 2021 SSC meeting.
