The 2013 U.S. AMOC/U.K. RAPID International Science Meeting will be held at the Hilton in the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore, Maryland.  Located just outside of Washington DC, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is a charming historic seaport offering a variety of historic and cultural experiences, fantastic restaurants and exciting nightlife. The Hilton is directly adjacent to the Oriole’s Baseball Stadium, Camden Yards.

Accommodations
 
Attendees are responsible for booking their own accommodations. A block of rooms has been set aside at a conference rate of $145 ($US) +15.5% tax (single or double). The hotel will honor the conference rate for three days before and after the dates of the meeting. The cut-off date for making hotel reservations at the group rate is June 23, 2013.  After this date, we cannot guarantee availability of rooms at the conference rate. Contact Tara Torres (tara@ucar.edu) if you need a special type of room, extended dates or if you have any problems reserving the room at the negotiated rate.

Additional Hotel Information
 
Wired internet or WiFi access is available in all guest rooms for $11.95/day ($US).  Complimentary internet access is available in the lobby bar and Diamond Tavern restaurant.  Parking is available at the hotel for $28/day (self) or $40/day (valet) ($US).  Check in time is 4:00 pm; Check out time is 12:00 pm.
 

General Meeting Information

All meeting general sessions will take place in Key Ballroom 8 on the second floor of the Hilton.  Registration/check-in will open at 8:30 AM on Tuesday morning.  We’ll have a desk on the second floor East Foyer outside the meeting room.  The meeting begins on Tuesday at 10:30 AM. 

Presentations

Have your slides on a USB drive and ready to load on the conference presentation computer (Mac running PowerPoint) no later than the break immediately prior to your talk.  It is recommended that you have your talk as a .pdf as well as in PowerPoint in case there are any compatibility issues.  We do not support Keynote or other presentation software.  Files should be saved on the presentation computer as: PresenterLastname_AMOC2013.ppt (or pdf).

Posters

All poster sessions will be in Key Ballrooms 11 & 12 on the second floor next to the general session room.  Posters can be displayed for the entirety of the meeting.  There are dedicated poster sessions on each day as well as a poster reception on Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM.  Each poster will be assigned half of a 96 x 48 in (244 x 122 cm) rectangular poster panel.  Please see us at the registration desk if you have any questions.

Meal Service

Coffee and tea service will be provided each morning prior to the start of the sessions.  There will be an AM and PM break each day with beverages and light snacks.  Lunch will be on your own; there are multiple restaurant options within walking distance of the hotel.  See us at the registration desk or the hotel concierge for more information.  Please plan to join us for a poster reception Tuesday evening in the second floor South Foyer from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Non-alcoholic beverages and appetizers will be provided.

OSNAP Meeting 

The Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) project scientists would like to invite any interested AMOC/RAPID attendees to an informational session on OSNAP on Monday, July 15, from 2:00-3:30pm.  This will be held in the Stone Conference Room on the third floor of the Hilton.  Please contact Susan Lozier if you have any quesitons.

 

Tourist Information
 
The Baltimore Visitor's guide website has a comprehensive listing of local events, attractions, and restaurants. You may take the water taxi service to other dining areas such as Fells Point. As in any large city, use caution when walking alone at night. The Charm City Circulator is a free bus that stops at the Hilton Hotel and continues on to other attractions around the Inner Harbor.

Baltimore is accessible from three major airports and several rail lines.
Local Airports
 
Baltimore International (BWI):  7 miles
National/Reagan Airport (DCA): 37 miles
Dulles (IAD): 50 miles (this can take 1.5 hours in rush hour traffic) 
 
Ground Transportation Options
 
The MARC Train connects the DC and Baltimore areas.  The MARC train can be accessed from DCA (National/Reagan) airport by taking the DC Metro from the airport to Union Station (Metro Red Line) and connecting to the MARC train to Baltimore/Camden Station (2 blocks from Hilton).
 
The Amtrak train line stops at Penn Station Baltimore (2 miles from Hilton).
 

The Light Rail is located right outside the Baltimore Hilton at the Baltimore Convention Center Stop.  You can take the Light Rail between BWI airport and the Hilton.

  • Approximate cost from DCA:  $85
Supershuttle 1-800-BLUE-VAN  Approximate cost from DC area to Baltimore Hilton is $48 ($US) each way and $13 ($US) from BWI airport to Baltimore Hilton.
