Ocean Uncertainty Quantification Summer School Logistics

Venue

The summer school will take place at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, Science Laboratory and Administration Building (SLAB) located on Virginia Key at 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, FL 33149

 

Lodging

US CLIVAR is arranging hotel accommodations for summer school participants at Hotel AKA Brickell located at 1395 Brickell Avenue, Miami, FL 33131. US CLIVAR will send hotel confirmations to participants prior to travel.

 

Getting There

US CLIVAR will reimburse up to $35 each way for travel between Miami International Airport and the hotel. The reimbursement will be based on receipts submitted following the summer school.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is a 20 to 35-minute ride to Hotel AKA Brickell. Uber/Lyft trips from the airport to the hotel are ~$30 plus tip.

Public transportation is available from MIA to Hotel Aka Brickell. Metrorail trains depart every 30 minutes, with more frequent service on the weekends every 15 minutes. Fare is $3. Board the orange line at MIA and disembark at the Brickell Station. The hotel is a 9-minute walk from the station.

If driving a vehicle, note that parking at the hotel is $50/day.

 

Summer School Daily Transportation

US CLIVAR is arranging a passenger bus to transport summer school participants from the hotel to the venue and return each day of the summer school. Pickup and departure times will be announced soon.

 

Technology

Students are expected to come equipped with a laptop computer for hands-on activities. Complimentary Wi-Fi and plug-in points for charging will be available at the hotel and SLAB building.

 

Assignment to be Completed Before Arriving at the Summer School

On the afternoon of the first day, each student will give a brief presentation on an ocean uncertainty topic or issue of their choice. Please prepare a short presentation on the topic or issue of ocean uncertainty quantification in your research that you are facing or anticipate to face in the near future. Your presentation should be in the form of one PDF slide and should not exceed 5 minutes. Please email PDFs to Alyssa at acannistraci@usclivar.org by Sunday, July 14, 2024.

 

Meals

US CLIVAR is providing $69 daily for meals. Participants can request and receive per-diem cash advances before arriving in Miami or can be reimbursed following the summer school. 

Hotel Aka Brickell’s restaurant ADRIFT Mare serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch. Salt Waterfront Restaurant is located on the Rosenstiel School campus and offers lunch options. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks will be provided on all five days. A networking event with light hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be held at the Salt Waterfront Restaurant at the end of the first day, July 15. 

 

Venue Specifics

Gender-neutral and inclusive restrooms can be found in Grosvenor North (rooms 133A and 133B), Marine Technology and Life Sciences Seawater Complex (rooms 102, 104, 202, and 204), Operations Building (rooms 10A and 21), and Shade House 4.

A limited number of visitor parking spaces are available at the entrance of campus next to the Campus Security Office. Additionally, free parking is available in the public parking lot located just outside of the campus gates along the Rickenbacker Causeway.
