Call for new US CLIVAR Panel members
The US CLIVAR Scientific Steering Committee seeks qualified individuals to serve on its three subsidiary panels beginning in 2018. Panel members formulate science goals and implementation strategies, catalyze and coordinate activities, and work with agencies and international partners to advance the progress of the climate research community. Nominations or self-nominations are due January 3, 2018.

Variations: Frontiers in western boundary current research
Western boundary current regions are often studied for their intensity of air-sea interaction and mesoscale variability, yet research addressing the implications of these characteristics for biogeochemical cycling has lagged behind. This latest edition of Variations, joint with US OCB, features articles discussing some of the most pressing research questions.

US CLIVAR Summit Report
The 2017 US CLIVAR Summit brought together over 80 members of the community for three days to review progress, identify opportunities, and develop strategies to advance program goals under the direction of the Science Plan.

Scientific Steering Committee member Karnauskas receives AGU award
Kris Karnauskas, University of Colorado-Boulder and member of the US CLIVAR Scientific Steering Committee, receives the 2017 AGU Ocean Sciences Early Career Award, which recognizes “significant contributions to and promise in the ocean sciences.”

Variations webinar on November 14
Building on a recent workshop, the next edition of Variations will be joint with the Ocean Carbon Biogeochemistry Program looking at western boundary current regions of the ocean, which have characteristics ideal for the study of biophysical interactions and carbon cycle processes. The authors of the articles will be giving a webinar on Tuesday, November 14 at 1:00 pm ET.

Abstracts due Feb 28 for International AMOC Science Meeting
On July 24-27, 2018, scientists will join together to exchange ideas and develop a better understanding of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and its influence on weather, climate, and ecosystems. The meeting will take place in Coconut Grove, Florida. Abstract submissions are due February 28.
New AMOC Science Team vice-chairs
New task team vice-chairs for the US AMOC Science Team will begin their leadership terms in November 2017 to guide the next two years of activities.

IV International Conference on El Niño-Southern Oscillation
Abstracts are now being accepted for an international conference on ENSO in a Warmer Climate. The goal of the conference is to review progress on the science of ENSO with a focus on examining the range of ENSO “flavors.”

Tropical Widening: What, When, Where (and Why)
On October 13, UCAR's University Community Programs will host a webcast featuring the co-chairs for the US CLIVAR Changing Width of the Tropical Belt Working Group. This talk will highlight recent findings on how and why the boundary of the tropics has been moving poleward. The webcast will begin at 12:00pm MT.
